Highlight
In 2022, Art4Giving funded a pilot program to bring together prisoners from the Virginia Correctional Center for Women and their children. Launched by non-profit Assisting Families Of Inmates (AFOI), the program turned a former warden’s residence into a “Family Reunification House” to host visit between incarcerated mothers and children. The house allows for true parent/child interaction, such as cooking and eating together, reading and playing educational games
With previous funding, we’ve been able to expand our program to new states, develop new coursework, launch innovative new programs like our Chromebook Laptop Program, and continue to grow our reentry services. We look forward to using this funding to further expand our reach and impact as we seek to bring the best opportunities possible to those in our community.
There is strong evidence that maintaining contact with one’s incarcerated parent improves a child’s emotional response to the incarceration and lowers the likelihood of recidivism among incarcerated parents. Without GEM, many daughters would be unable to visit their incarcerated moms. We are so grateful to Art4Giving, and to Ross, for this generous and much needed support.

Incarcerated mothers and their children strive to reconnect and strengthen their relationship prior to the mother’s reentry into the home at the end of their sentence. AFOI is proud to open the Family Reunification House at the Virginia Correctional Center for Women, the first of its type in Virginia, and we are very grateful to Ross and his family for this generous donation.
